Susan Kuklin’s Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out is a work of documentary nonfiction that profiles six transgender and gender-nonconforming young people through extensive interviews and portraits. Each subject tells their own story of gender identity, family dynamics, school experiences, and the process of transitioning or choosing not to. Kuklin approaches her subjects with journalistic care and human warmth, letting each teenager speak in their own voice without editorializing. The result is a book that feels less like an issue guide and more like meeting six real people.

Beyond Magenta was challenged 10 times in the 2024-2025 PEN America data, with bans in Florida, Iowa, and at the national level (Department of Defense schools). It has been one of the most frequently challenged books in America since its publication, consistently appearing on the ALA’s most banned list. The objections cite LGBTQ+ content and passages in which the teens describe their sexual experiences, including one passage that challengers frequently excerpt out of context. Kuklin has responded that the book’s critics are attacking the existence of transgender teenagers, not the book itself. Given that the book is simply transgender teens telling their own stories, it’s hard to argue she’s wrong.
